Smooth Transition, Big Wins
Canon's collaborative approach transforms Tegel's print management
Tegel, an iconic Kiwi brand, has been feeding families since 1961. With over 60 years in operation, Tegel now employs more than 2,500 people across 16 locations nationally, including three major processing sites. As a fully vertically integrated business, Tegel manages the entire journey from egg to plate, processing around one million chickens each week to supply both the NZ and international markets.
Tegel faced significant challenges in their print and document management environment and sought greater support and efficiencies. The team was seeking improvements in troubleshooting, resolution time, security and the general employee user experience associated with the print fleet. Additionally, Tegel had limited visibility of the volumes and ratios of colour and mono printing at a user level, which led to a suspicion that they were printing higher volumes of colour than necessary for their business type.
Mitigating the cost and risk of change were key considerations for Tegel. For instance, there was a common myth that switching address books from one vendor to another would be challenging, and an assumption that upgrading with the current incumbent would be easier.
“We often take our printer fleet for granted - until something goes wrong! It’s a crucial part of our business infrastructure; when our printers run smoothly, so does the business. Tegel had reached its scheduled renewal period, a process we undertake every five years. Following a comprehensive tender process, we selected Canon, and the transition has been remarkably smooth.”
Jason Mathewson, GM – Information Systems, Tegel Foods LTD
With an impressive response to Tegel’s RFP requirements, open and transparent communication, a genuine connection was established from the start. With full trust in Tegel’s knowledge and capability of their own print environment, Canon and Tegel worked collaboratively to quickly identify pain points and validate the existing infrastructure. Canon presented a long-term scalable business solution from the outset that gives Tegel better visibility and control of their printing environment.
“From the very start of the RFP process, we were impressed with the detail and speed of service from Canon. It quickly felt as if we had been working together for a while. We felt very comfortable with both the level of service and print product range for our business.”

During Tegel's transition, the initial apprehension to change proved to be unfounded. Canon provided consistent support throughout and beyond, ensuring that Tegel’s employees barely noticed the fleet changeout. A dedicated and proven project management team was assigned to manage the overall deployment and ensure a structured, seamless rollout, provide excellent ongoing support. This approach facilitated clear communication lines with all stakeholders involved, both internal and external. Early issues experienced with the project delivery were quickly identified and fixed through this management team.
Transitioning into BAU, a single-point contact was established between dedicated service delivery managers at both Canon and Tegel, ensuring regular check-ins, accurate information, early problem identification, and clear updates will be maintained throughout the term of the agreement. The highly collaborative effort resulted in the start of a successful partnership, demonstrating the effectiveness and capabilities of Canon’s solutions, project management, and service delivery.
“Since engaging Canon, we’ve heard nothing from our staff. Printers were replaced and people kept on printing. It’s a testament on delivering good solutions, training and educating people on how everything works. Being able to swap out any equipment and hearing nothing is a great outcome.”
Jason Mathewson
With the right support and a proactive approach, the right change can significantly enhance printing capabilities, streamline efficiency, and drive business success. Embracing change can lead to growth, new opportunities, and unexpected benefits.
