Tax Time and Your Home Office Printer

Ever needed to print something in your home-office and wish you had one within arm’s reach? With the new norm of working remotely, printers are one of those essentials that are valuable to have. The EOFY is a great time to capitalise on purchasing or upgrading your printer with the potential to make the most out of your personal income tax deductions.

Tax tips

This is general information only and does not constitute taxation or legal advice. Other requirements under the tax law may apply. We recommend seeking professional tax and/or legal advice to determine whether you are eligible to claim a deduction for any purchases.

If you're an employee who works from home, you may be able to claim a deduction for expenses you incur relating to that work. These can include printers and consumables (e.g ink cartridges and toners).

To claim a work-related deduction as an employee you must have spent the money yourself and not have been reimbursed, the expense must be directly related to earning your income and you must have a record to prove the expense and purchase (usually a receipt or tax invoice).

There are three methods you can use to claim your working from home expenses and the ATO (www.ato.gov.au) provides guidance on these methods as well as record keeping requirements.

1 Comparing print yield of GI690 black and colour ink bottles using the PIXMA G3600 MegaTank with yield of standard-capacity cartridge set: PG-645 Black and CL-646 Colour using PIXMA HOME TS3460. Yields are calculated with international standard ISO/IEC 24711, which uses test prints designed to represent typical A4 documents and testing in controlled conditions. Yields calculated with subsequent sets of ink, printing continuously. During initial printer setup, a certain amount of ink is used to fill the print head's nozzles and so the page yield of the initial bundled set of ink is lower than that of subsequent sets.

2 Ink cost for PIXMA G3600 MegaTank is calculated $29.99 black/6,000 approx. page yield + ($24.99 colour x3 bottles)/7,000 approx. page yield per bottle = $0.0157/page (or $7.85/500 pages). Ink cost for standard-capacity cartridge set for PIXMA HOME TS3460 is calculated $29.50 black/180 approx. page yield + $35.50 colour/180 approx. page yield = $0.361/page (or $181/500 pages).
