How To Use Your Camera As A Webcam

EOS Webcam Utility is a free software download that enables you to use your Canon camera as a webcam and present yourself in an ultra-high-quality and professional way during your online meetings and live streaming events.

Whether you’re a professional spending more time working from home and on online meetings or a budding gamer/social media star destined for big things, EOS Webcam Utility enables you to present yourself more professionally by using your Canon camera as a webcam for free.

The software is completely free to download and compatible with a wide range of platforms – from Zoom and Facebook Live to Skype and Twitch.

How to turn your camera into a webcam and start streaming with EOS Webcam Utility:

1. Grab the Gear You’ll Need to Use Your Canon Camera as a Webcam

You’ll need:
• A Canon camera with a fully charged battery
• A USB cable to connect your camera to your computer
• A tripod to control your framing

2. Set up Your Camera

Switch on your camera and select Movie Mode. You can shoot in full auto mode or in manual mode if you’d prefer total control over your video settings.

Optimal settings for smooth online video streaming are:
• Full-HD mode
• Selecting a frame rate of 29.97p / 30p (or 23.98 / 24p depending on your camera).
• Place your camera on a tripod for stability and frame yourself up.

3. Set up Your Audio Recording

Your camera will only capture video footage and not audio when using EOS Webcam Utility. To record sound, you can use the built-in microphone on your computer or you can also connect an external microphone to your computer to further enhance the quality of your online broadcasting.

4. Download EOS Webcam Utility Software

You can download the EOS Webcam Utility software for free on the Canon website at: www.canon.com.au/services-and-apps/eos-webcam-utility.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed the software, connect your camera to your computer using a USB cable.

5. Sync EOS Webcam Utility with Your Streaming Platform

Now your camera is set up and ready to go, all you need to do is pair the EOS Webcam Utility with whichever streaming platform you prefer to use.

The software is compatible with a wide range of video meeting and streaming platforms, including the following:
• Cisco Webex®
• Discord
• Microsoft Teams
• Facebook Live
• Messenger
• Hangouts
• Hangouts Meets
• Skype
• Open Broadcaster Software (OBS)
• Slack
• Twitch Studio
• YouTube Live
• Streamlabs
• ZOOM

In the above video, we demonstrate the set-up process when using Zoom, but the process is more or less the same no matter which platform you prefer to use. Once your camera is connected to your computer with a USB cable, all you need to do is:
• Open up your preferred video streaming application and sign in
• Navigate to the settings menu, find devices and select “video” or “camera”
• Navigate to the dropdown menu and change the selection from “integrated camera” to “EOS Webcam Utility”

By flicking between the integrated webcam on your computer and EOS Webcam Utility, you will quickly be able to see the huge leap in quality by using your Canon camera.

If quality is important to you and you need to look more professional in your video conference calls or online streaming then this is definitely a great way to go.
