A Content Creator’s First Impressions of the EOS R8

We invited content creator Daniel Formosa (aka @mosashoots) to try out the EOS R8 full-frame mirrorless camera and to get his first impressions.

“The EOS R8 is a full-frame mirrorless camera with powerful features that all hybrid shooters will love, and with its game-changing photo/video switch, this is definitely one of the best cameras for content creation on the market.”

Life as professional content creator

My creative journey began while studying 3D animation in university. I soon started filming cinematic short films and pursuing my interest in photography. As my portfolio grew on Instagram, I was approached by companies and hired to create content for them.

Today, I mainly create content for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. My content differs from platform to platform - for example, I use Instagram to connect with potential clients and display my best work to like-minded creators, then I post educational videos on TikTok, and long-form content on YouTube.

One camera to create all

“As a hybrid content creator, it’s important that the cameras I use are equally strong whether I’m shooting photos or video.”

Broadly speaking, I look for rapid autofocus for shooting fast-moving subjects. I’m also starting to depend more and more on smart autofocus, where the camera detects whether a subject is a human, vehicle, or animal, for example. Good ergonomics and weight distribution are also important. And as a hybrid content creator, I also need a quick and easy way of changing between video and photo, so the EOS R8’s dedicated photo/video switch is ideal.

With photography in mind, I look for a 24 megapixel or above sensor to capture higher detailed images that I can crop and adjust. I also look for around 20+ fps photo shooting for those times when I’m trying to capture fast-moving subjects. For videography, I want at least 4k 30fps per second and the option to shoot at higher frame rates, like 120fps. Being able to shoot in LOG with 10-bit colour is also essential as it allows me greater control over my colour grading.

After reviewing the EOS R8, I’m excited to see that it ticks all the boxes, which is why I’m happy to recommend it for content creation.

Hands-on: EOS R8 first impressions

My first impressions of the EOS R8 were very good. I was surprised by its lightweight and compact form factor, and I love the photo/video switch, which allows you to change modes rapidly. I was also very impressed by how quick and easy it was to transfer photos and video footage directly from the camera to my phone via USB and Wi-Fi. It’s very comfortable to work with – the perfect content creation companion.

The Canon EOS R5 has been my workhorse for quite a while, so I was interested to compare it to the R8. The first thing I noticed was that the EOS R8 can shoot photos at a very impressive 40fps, which is double what my EOS R5 can do at 20fps and, although the R5 can shoot 8K RAW, the R8’s 4K is oversampled from 6K with 10-bit YCbCr 4:2:2 when shooting, which is more than enough for any content creator.

Best lenses for content creation

I use three different Canon RF zoom lenses to cover all my content creation needs:

1. RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM

This is a highly versatile focal range that I use for everything from portrait and street photography to automotive and architectural videography.

2. RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM

This wide-angle zoom lens is perfect for travel and architecture photography and videography. It’s also my go-to for shooting vlogs and talking head video footage.

3. RF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM

Whether I’m shooting automotive video or sports photography, this versatile telephoto lens is perfect for shooting fast-moving subjects that I can’t get close to.

What makes the EOS R8 the best camera for content creation?

The EOS R8 is a powerful full-frame mirrorless camera that shoots 4K 60fps footage oversampled from 6K, which is insane! It’s a lightweight camera, perfectly balanced and packed with incredible features.

“The EOS R8 has all the photo and video features any content creator will need to capture their vision their dreams and produce professional work.”

The EOS R8 is really good value for money, as it’s packed with all the professional features you see in cameras like the EOS R5, but at a more affordable price point. Learn more about the EOS R8 here.
