Meet the 2022 Winners of the Canon Grants Program

7th September 2022

Canon New Zealand has recognised three inspiring not-for-profit initiatives which shine a light on environmental and social issues in communities throughout New Zealand, awarding $15,000 worth of grants.

Hearing Dogs NZ, Sustainability Trust and Kia Kotahi Ako have each been awarded $2,500 cash and $2,500 worth of Canon equipment of their choice, for the positive impact their project makes in the areas of education, environment and the community.

Canon New Zealand Chief Executive, Kim Conner, says the judging panel was impressed by the hard work, dedication and innovative thinking of this year’s winners.

“They all have a clear vision for how they want to develop and grow their initiatives and, in doing so, positively impact their local community.

“It’s our great pleasure to give them a helping hand through our Grants program. It’s one of the many ways we give back; something that underpins the way Canon works across the world,” Conner says.

The winning projects include:
 • Community Grant – Hearing Dogs NZ: Hearing Dogs NZ assess, select, place and train dogs to become hearing dogs for deaf and severely hearing impaired people
 • Environmental Grant – Sustainability Trust: Sustainability Trust run a wide range of community programmes which educate people about how they can live more sustainably
 • Education Grant – Kia Kotahi Ako: Kia Kotahi Ako runs the NZ school pilot of We Share Solar, a global science project which encourages students to learn about solar energy and tackle issues of climate change and the environment

More information on the award recipients:

Community Grant – Hearing Dogs NZ (New Plymouth)
Hearing Dogs NZ is an independent charitable trust which provides specially trained hearing dogs to people with hearing problems, at no charge. As well as providing their owner with a sense of comfort, greater independence and social interaction, hearing dogs are trained to alert their owner to sounds such as doorbells, firealarms, text messages, a baby crying and phone calls.

Clare McLaughlin from NZ Hearing Dogs says they are absolutely thrilled to be the recipients of Canon’s grant. “We are passionate about providing specially trained Hearing Dogs to deaf and severely hearing-impaired New Zealanders. Due to Canon’s generosity, and using its digital technology, we will now be able to capture and record the progress of each dog - from puppy raising through to intensive training and finally placement with their deaf recipient, “she says.

Environmental Grant - Sustainability Trust (Wellington)
Sustainability Trust runs a wide range of RepairED programmes which are all about fixing things rather than throwing them away. One example is its Just Sew Sessions. These are monthly drop-in repair hubs where clothes can be mended with the support of sewing volunteers – with a view to encouraging people to reduce textile waste to landfill.

“We are so excited and grateful to be announced as one of Canon's Oceania Grant recipients. This award will support our RepairED programme, which provides equitable opportunities for Wellingtonians to take climate change action through repair,” says Tallulah Farrar, Digital & Social Content Producer at Sustainability Trust.

With Canon's support, we'll be able to spread the word of repair far and wide and show the impact and ease of mending to more people. It's awesome to get this backing and feel the support from Canon and those who voted for us - repair is a fundamental part of the circular economy and there's clearly an appetite for it.”

Education Grant: Kia Kotahi Ako (Christchurch)
Kia Kotaki Ako is currently running the New Zealand school pilot programmes of We Share Solar, a global science project which encourages students to learn about solar energy by building solar energy kits. Founder and Chair, Joanne McEachen, says We Share Solar focuses on encouraging students to tackle climate change and solve future energy issues. Kia Kotaki Ako aims to collaborate with Māori science advisors to co-design a version of the solar project in Te Reo Māori, reflecting the Māori world view.

“This grant will provide an opportunity to showcase mātauranga Māori and indigenous approaches to climate action in partnership with kura kaupapa Māori, Kia Kotahi Ako and a global STEM programme. We are excited to document this journey with the whānau whānui of Te Pihipihinga Kākano Mai i Rangiātea and share our passion for the kaitiakitanga for the taiao.”
