Cannot Install the Printer Driver

Issue

Cause and solution

If the installation does not start even after the Setup CD-ROM is inserted into your computer's disc drive:

Start the installation following the procedure below.

1. Click Start then Computer.

In Windows XP, click Start then My Computer.

In Windows 2000, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.

2. Double-click the CD-ROM icon on the displayed window.

If the contents of the CD-ROM are displayed, double-click MSETUP4.EXE.

Double-click the CD-ROM icon on your desktop to start installation.

Caution

- If the CD-ROM icon is not displayed, try the followings:

Remove the CD-ROM from your computer, then insert it again.
Restart your computer.

- If the icon is still not displayed, try different discs and see if they are displayed. If other discs are displayed, there is a problem with the Setup CD-ROM. In this case, contact your Canon service representative.

Cause and solution

If you are unable to proceed beyond the Printer Connection screen:

If you are unable to proceed beyond the Printer Connection screen, make sure that the USB cable is securely plugged into the USB port of the printer and is connected to the computer, and then follow the procedure below to reinstall the printer driver.

Caution

In Windows Vista, "The printer is not detected. Check the connection." may be displayed depending on the computer you use. In this case, wait for a while. If you still cannot proceed to the next step, follow the procedure below to reinstall the printer driver.

Cause and solution

1. Click Cancel on the Printer Connection screen.

2. Click Start Over on the Installation Failure screen.

3. Click Back on the screen that appears next.

4. Click Exit on the PIXMA XXX screen, then remove the CD-ROM.

5. Turn the printer off.

6. Restart the computer.

7. Make sure that you have no application software running.

8. Follow the procedure described in your setup manual to reinstall the printer driver.

Cause and solution

In other cases:

Follow the procedure described in your setup manual for proper installation.

If the driver was not installed correctly, uninstall the printer driver, restart your computer, then reinstall the driver.

If you reinstall the printer driver, select Custom Install on the Setup CD-ROM.

Caution

If the installer was forced to be terminated due to a Windows error, the system may be in an unstable condition and you may not be able to install the driver. Restart your computer before reinstalling.

To use the printer by connecting it to a computer, software including the drivers need to be copied (installed) to the computer's hard disk.

The screens below are based on Windows Vista operating system Ultimate Edition (hereafter referred to as " Windows Vista ") and Mac OS X v.10.5.x .

Caution

Quit all running applications before installation.
You need to log on as the administrator (or a member of the Administrators group).
Do not switch users during the installation process.
It may be necessary to restart your computer during the installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions and click OK , and do not remove the Setup CD-ROM during restarting. The installation resumes from where it left off when your computer has been restarted.
Mac OS 9 , Mac OS X Classic environments, or Mac OS X v.10.3.8 or earlier are not supported.

Windows

Caution

If the Found New Hardware or Found

New Hardware Wizard screen appears:

(1).Remove the USB cable connected to your computer.

The screen may close. In this case, proceed from 1.

(2).Click Cancel to quit the screen.

(3).Proceed from 1.

1.Press the ON button (A) to TURN OFF THE PRINTER.

Caution

Operating noise continues for about 30 seconds until the printer turns off. Make sure that the POWER lamp (B) stops flashing.

2.Turn on the computer, then insert the Setup CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

The setup program should run automatically.

Windows Vista -⋗ Go to Step 3

Windows XP/2000 -⋗ Go to Step 5

Caution

If the program does not start automatically, doubleclick the CD-ROM icon on the computer. When the CD-ROM contents appear, double-click MSETUP4. EXE.

3.Windows Vista

AutoPlay screen appears, click Run Msetup4.exe .

4.Windows Vista

User Account Control screen appears, click Continue .

If the same screen reappears in subsequent steps, click Continue .

5.When the Select Your Place of Residence screen appears, select your place of residence, then click Next.

Caution

If the Select Language screen appears, select a language, then click Next .

6.Click Easy Install.

The drivers, application software, and on-screen

manuals are installed automatically.

Caution

If you want to select particular items to install, click Custom Install and follow the on-screen instructions to proceed with the installation.

7.Click Install.

Move the cursor over items to display explanations.

8.Read the License Agreement screen carefully and click Yes.

Installation starts.

Caution

Follow any on-screen instructions to install thesoftware.

9.When the Printer Connection screen appears, connect one end of the USB cable to the computer, the other to the printer, then TURN THE PRINTER ON.

Caution

It takes about 15 seconds for the POWER lamp to light green.
When the printer is recognized by the computer, a message appears on the screen.
If you cannot go to the next procedure after 10 minutes, click Help and confi rm the message.

Caution

The USB port is located on the right side at the back of the printer.

10.Align the Print Head

When the Print Head Alignment screen appears, load a sheet of supplied speciality paper (MP-101) in the Rear Tray (C).

Caution

Be sure to use the supplied speciality paper (MP-101) for Automatic Print Head Alignment.
MP-101 cannot be fed from the Cassette. Load it in the Rear Tray.
MP-101 has the front and back sides. Load it with the whiter side facing up.

Caution

For details, refer to [ Loading Paper ].

11.Click Execute.

12.When the Start Print Head Alignment screen appears, click Align Print Head .

Click OK in the subsequent message.

Printing of the pattern starts.

Wait until the pattern printing ends (about 7 minutes), and go to the next step.

Caution

Make sure that the O utput Tray Extension (D) is extended.

13.Make sure that the pattern shown is printed, then click Next on the Print Head Alignment screen.

Print Head Alignment is now complete.

Caution

When Print Head Alignment cannot be executed properly, the Alarm lamp will fl ash orange 11 times. In this case, refer to " When Printing Becomes Faint or Colors Are Incorrect " in the on-screen manual: Basic Guide .
The pattern is printed in blue and black.

14.When the Load plain paper into the cassette screen appears, load plain paper in the Cassette (E) and click Next.

15.Click Next.

It may take a while for the next screen to appear. Click Next only once.

16.Click Next .

If connected to the Internet, the user registration page appears. Follow the onscreen instructions to register your product. You will need your product serial number, which is located on the inside of the printer.

Caution

Internet connection is required. (Connection fees apply.)

Caution

To register later, click Cancel. User Registration can be started from the Solution Menu icon.
The User Registration screen will only be displayed when Europe, Middle East, Africa is selected on the Select Your Place of Residence screen.

17.When the Extended Survey Program screen appears, confirm the message.

If you can agree, click Agree .

If you click Do not agree , the Extended Survey Program will not be installed. (This has no effect on the printer's functionality.)

18.Click Exit .

If Restart is displayed, make sure that the Restart the system now (recommended) check box is selected, then click Restart . Remove the CD-ROM after clicking Restart and restarting the computer.

Macintosh

1.Connect one end of the USB cable to the computer and the other to the printer.

Make sure the printer is turned on.

Caution

The USB port is located on the right side at the
back of the printer.

2.Turn on the computer, then insert the Setup CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

3.Double-click the Setup icon.

If the CD-ROM folder does not open automatically, double-click the CANON_IJ icon on the desktop.

4.Enter your administrator name and password. Click OK .

If you do not know your administrator name or password, click Help , then follow the onscreen instructions.

5.When the Select Your Place of Residence screen appears, select your place of residence, then click Next.

Caution

If the Select Language screen appears, select a language, then click Next.

6.Click Easy Install .

The drivers, application software, and on-screen

manuals are installed automatically.

Caution

If you want to select particular items to install, click Custom Install and follow the on-screen instructions to proceed with the installation.

7.Click Install .

Move the cursor over items to display explanations.

8.Read the License Agreement screen carefully and click Yes .

Installation starts.

Caution

Follow any on-screen instructions to install the software.

9.When the Start Setup screen appears, click Execute .

10.Click Restart.

The Print Head Alignment screen appears after the computer has been restarted.

11.Align the Print Head

Load a sheet of supplied speciality paper ( MP-101 ) into the Rear Tray (A) .

Caution

Be sure to use the supplied speciality paper ( MP-101 ) for Automatic Print Head Alignment.
MP-101 cannot be fed from the Cassette . Load it in the Rear Tray .
MP-101 has the front and back sides. Load it with the whiter side facing up.

12.Click Execute .

13.When this screen appears, click OK .

Printing of the pattern starts.

The Setup Complete screen will only be displayed when Europe, Middle East, Africa is selected on the Select Your Place of Residence screen.

17.Click Next.

If connected to the Internet, the user registration page appears. Follow the onscreen instructions to register your product. You will need your product serial number, which is located on the inside of the printer.

Caution

Internet connection is required. (Connection fees apply.)

Caution

To register later, click Cancel . User Registration can be started from the Solution Menu icon.
The User Registration screen will only be displayed when Europe, Middle East, Africa is selected on the Select Your Place of Residence screen.

18.Click Exit .

Remove the Setup CD-ROM and keep it in a safe place.
