Open Brief FAQ
  • How can I spend the Grant money?

The money is to help get your project going and completed, whether it is flights, talent, props, studio, editing or simply to pay your expenses while you are shooting your personal project.
  • Is the Professional Grant just for still photography?

Yes, the grant is for still photography, however we encourage the use of video to document your personal project or be part of it if the main output is still, and the story can be told through stills.
  • What should I keep in mind?

Be aware of your end goal and how you envisioned it to be showcased.
  • Who does the judging?

The submissions will be narrowed down to five, the judging panel will then discuss the briefs further, this may involve face to face or over the phone discussion. The judging panel is made up of Canon representatives and experienced industry representatives.
  • Why is it only open to Professional Photographers?

The Pro Grant is an initiative hosted to support professional photographers – to qualify applicants must either own a photography business that is registered for GST purposes; or work in a full time capacity as a paid, professional photographer.
  • Why is the payment split?

We want to ensure you have the support from start to finish by Canon and appreciate that some expenses will be incurred at the beginning of the project. $5,000 will be paid upfront to the winner, and a further payment of $5,000 will be made upon project completion.
  • What are the dates again?

Applications open on 1 July 2021 and must be submitted by no later than 11.59pm on 31 August 2021. Late entries will not be considered. The winner will be announced on 30 September 2021.
  • Can I submit more than one brief?
