Local Adventures with the PowerShot G5X Mark II

27th September 2019

Kiwi adventure photographer, Guy Hasler puts the brand new PowerShot G5X Mark II to the test at some of Auckland's most popular photo destinations. Here are his thoughts on our latest compact companion!

Travelling is about experiencing new and often unexpected moments. As photographers, we want to be able to capture these experiences in the best way we can, despite changing conditions and a range of different subjects. In preparation for this, it is easy to want to drag round bulky cameras and a range of lenses and accessories.

While there are circumstances when these cameras are the right tool for the job, having a small setup means you can forget about the gear and focus on the experiences themselves. This is where the PowerShot G5X Mark II excels.

The PowerShot G5X Mark II is a compact camera that weighs only 340 grams and is small enough to slip into your pocket! Despite its size, it packs so many features – some that even put the pro level cameras to shame! The 8.8 - 40mm (24 - 120mm Equivalent) lens gives you have the ability to capture subjects through a range of focal lengths, while creating beautiful depth with its F1.8 - F2.8 aperture. The camera's one-inch sensor creates up to 20Mp RAW images, which allows you to edit your beautiful travel photos without losing any quality.

I often find myself shooting at sunset, or under the light of the stars, so I wanted to put the low-light capabilities of the G5X Mark II to the test. It is safe to say it exceeded my expectations in that regard. The in-body stabilisation allowed me to capture sharp photos even in low light, and its manual controls meant that I could have a slow enough shutter-speed to capture the milky-way at night.

The PowerShot G5X Mark II is an incredible solution to lightweight travel, without compromising on quality. It is the perfect choice for those looking for an on-the-go setup to create beautiful photos and videos.
