What is a positive?

The Basics:

In photography, a positive is an image that reflects the same tones of the original scene, such as a finished print. It is the opposite of a negative in which tones are reversed so the lightest areas of a subject appear the darkest and vice versa.

The terminology stems from the film days where negative film was used to capture the image, and processed in to positive ‘slides’.
