What is a JPEG?

The Basics:

JPEG - short for Joint Photographic Experts Group - is an image recording type which is processed internally by the camera. It is considered the most universal image file type, with effective compression to yield good quality photos, with small file sizes. Due to its internal processing, it can be viewed without having to go through image processing software.
