Canon EYEcon is a competition created especially for New Zealand’s emerging photographers and filmmakers. It’s the ultimate opportunity to showcase your talent, gain valuable experience and pitch yourself against the best in your field. EYEcon Logo 

There are some truly incredible prizes to be won too, including a range of ‘money can’t buy experience days’ with some of New Zealand’s most prominent photographers.

This competition has always been open to tertiary students and assistant photographers within New Zealand. However this year we’re taking it to the next level. For the first time ever, both film students and film assistants or Year 12 & 13 high school photography students your own category to submit entries too.

Who can enter?

The EYEcon2013 competition is split into three categories for you to submit an entry too. Each category is judged individually and has separate prize packages to be won:

  • STILL PHOTOGRAPHY: Tertiary students and assistant photographers currently studying photography,
  • STILL PHOTOGRAPHY : Year 12 & 13 High School Students currently studying photography.
  • FILM :Tertiary students and assistant film makers currently studying film.

Prospective entrants must register their interest by 5pm October 1, 2013

All registered entrants must make their final entry submission by 5pm on November 4, 2013

Catch the judges eye

Photography entries will be judged by leading New Zealand photographers - Emma Bass, Lee Howell and Brett Phibbs. Film entries will be judged by Garth Badger. They’ll be looking for your lateral, creative and original thinking, while taking quality and technical expertise into account too. Judging will be held during the first week of November 2013.

Your shot at success

Your submission will need to include:

Still Photography entries. For the tertiary student, photography assistant or the Year 12 and 13 high school categories, your submission will need to include:

  • A selection of four A4 original photographic images of professional quality (or semi-professional quality for secondary students) created after 01/01/2013.
  • A 500-1000 word explanation of what the brief for your portfolio was, what inspires you and who inspires you as an emerging photographer.
  • Digital copy of your images.

Film entries. For tertiary film students and film assistants your submission will need to include:

  • A one to three minute video that represents your styleand genre.
  • One frame grab that represents your video(used for promotion).
  • Submit your work via aVimeo link with password email toeyecon@canon.co.nz(where applicable, a full talent, music or location release is required)
  • A 500-1000 word explanation of what the brief for your film was, what inspire you and whoinspires youas an emerging filmmaker.

Note: still images can be included in your video but must onlymake up a maximum 20% of viewing time.

Amazing prizes to be won

Still Photography - for tertiary students and photography assistants.

The overall winner will receive:

  • $3,000 Canon dollars (RRP incl GST) to spend on anyCanon Digital SLR, lenses, Canon printer and/orCanon photo paper and inks (direct from Canon).
  • Canon PIXMA Pro1 printer RRP $1,849*.
  • $1,000 cash.
  • An ‘experience day’ with the three CanonEyeconmentor photographers (flights and accommodation included).
  • An ‘experience half day’ with Canon’s creativeagency bcg2.
  • A1 large format print of an image of choice.
  • NZIPP and AIPA membership for one year.
  • Profile in PR releases and through social media.

Second place will receive:

Organisation/institution of the first placed photographer will receive:

  • $2,000 Canon dollars (RRP incl GST) to spend on any
  • Canon Digital SLR, lenses, Canon printer and/or Canon photo paper and inks (direct from Canon).
  • Canon PIXMA PRO -10 printer RR P $1,399*

Still Photography - for Year 12 & 13 students.

The overall winner will receive:

  • Canon EOS 7D 15-85is RR P $3,599*.
  • PIXMA PRO 100 printer RR P $999*.
  • An ‘experience day’ with a previous CanonEyeconmentor photographer (flights and accommodation included).
  • An ‘experience half day’ with Canon’s creative agency bcg2.

Film - for tertiary students and film assistants.

The overall winner will receive:
