Community Sponsorship & Donations

Canon and Sponsorship

Canon’s sponsorship activities are carefully developed to bring our brand values to life and support the objectives of the business. We also regularly support the nation’s professional photographic organisations, including the New Zealand Institute of Photography and the Photographic Society of New Zealand. Examples of our recent partnerships are:

Canon Media Awards
In December 2010, Canon announced its sponsorship of New Zealand’s premier media awards. The newly named Canon Media Awards are run annually in association with the Newspaper Publishers’ Association, and recognises the many achievements of the New Zealand media. The awards cover the areas of newspapers, magazines, websites and photography – with special categories recognising student journalism, cartoonist and columnists.

Hard on the Heels
Canon New Zealand is partnering with legendary kiwi photographer Peter Bush from 2010 to 2012 to support his exhibition, Hard on the Heels – a tribute to Peter’s career capturing six decades of the All Blacks rugby team. Touring around New Zealand to thirteen different venues, the exhibition features more than 100 of Peter’s most memorable All Black images and is a testament to his photographic skill and passion for the game.  It features a mix of Peter’s personal favourites and great moments in history; as well as the controversial, contentious and humorous behind-the-scenes shots of teams on tour and relaxing post-game.

North Shore National Salon of Photography
The North Shore National Salon of Photography Competition was established in 1995 by the North Shore Photographic Society. This annual national photographic event showcases the work of budding photographers in New Zealand – with category awards ranging from colour to monochrome prints. Canon has supported the competition since its inception, and hosts the exhibition each year at the Canon New Zealand head office in Auckland.

Canon and NZIPP

Canon is very proud to be a supporter of the annual NZIPP Iris awards, the prestigious awards are very highly regarded in the photographic industry. Along with sponsoring the Landscape Photographer of the Year category Canon enjoys involvement with the three day Infocus conference and open day to the public.

Canon and PSNZ

The longest running photographic competition in the country – The National Exhibition (NATEX) - hosted by the Photographic Society of New Zealand brings together thousands of images by New Zealand photographers. Canon has the honour, for many years now, of both supporting the Society and being the major sponsor of the NATEX.

Canon & the Community

Canon and its employees have put the Kyosei philosophy into practice through a number of activities in 2010 and 2011 – supporting more than 12 charitable and community organisations. These include:

@Heart
Canon supported a nationwide billboard campaign for @Heart – a national organisation which provides assistance to families affected by childhood heart conditions.  Our support included the production and installation of billboards in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. For the past two years, teams from Canon have also braved the freezing cold icy water to raise funds for @Heart in the annual Heart Stopper Challenge. Canon has also provided cameras and printers to affected families to help them capture memorable moments.

Make-A-Wish Foundation
In 2011, Canon presented a DSLR camera to Auckland-based photography enthusiast, Katherine Paton, who suffers from recurring acute renal transplant rejection. The donation was carried out with the assistance of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Rangitoto College, North Shore City
A group of Rangitoto College students embarked on the trip of a lifetime to Turkey, thanks to the support of Canon. The trip saw ten students travel to Turkey to live with exchange families for two weeks and attend a special commemoration ceremony for those who fell at Gallipoli at Canakkale Savaslari. Canon provided financial support for the students, as well as equipment for a fundraising event and sweatshirts for the students.

Breast Cancer Foundation
Canon donated ten dollars from every IXUS 80IS camera sold to help the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation to promote awareness of breast cancer, provide information and education, fund research and support community outreach programmes.  More than 11,000 of the pocket sized cameras were snapped up, and Canon donated $112,000 to the foundation.

Mayoral Earthquake Relief Fund
Canon held the largest online auction in its history to raise money for the victims of the Christchurch earthquake. The auction, on trademe.co.nz, saw more than 100 Canon products valued at over $50,000 go under the virtual hammer.  All proceeds were donated to the Mayoral Earthquake Relief Fund.

Prime Minister’s Christchurch Earthquake Appeal
Canon companies in the Oceania region – Canon New Zealand, Canon Australia and Canon Information Systems Research Australia (CiSRA) - pledged NZ$80,000 to the Prime Minister’s Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

Red Cross Samoan Earthquake & Tsunami Appeal
Canon made a $10,000 donation to The Red Cross Samoan Earthquake and Tsunami Appeal to assist the work taking place to rebuild the devastated island.  Canon employees also collected and donated hundreds of dollars internally as well.

Community Planting Days
Community planting days run annually between May & August, with Canon employees and their families volunteering their time to help with planting at the Tuff Crater Reserve in Auckland.

Toner Cartridge Recycle Project
Canon’s toner recycling program
encourages and enables customers to reduce, reuse and recycle their ink cartridges, toner cartridges, toner bottles and waste toner cartridges via recycling boxes.
